'Better Call Saul' premiere: Breaking off a plan gone 'Bad'

It’s been well over a year since Walter White left our television sets, his pork pie hat hung on the rack next to a slew of Emmy statues. But his world — and the rich characters in it — have far from vanished, thanks to AMC’s Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.

An origin story, Better Call Saul hails from Peter Gould and Bad creator Vince Gilligan, and explores the earlier years of America’s favorite sleazy attorney, Saul Goodman. Comparisons to Breaking Bad will run rampant throughout the series, but Better Call Saul establishes up front a tone that embraces comedy more than its predecessor, even if the comedy skews dark in a sometimes macabre way.
