North Korea's Kim Jong Un open to 'highest-level' talks with South
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in New Year's speech Thursday that he is open to more talks with Seoul or even a summit with his South Korean counterpart, but stressed North Korea will continue to strengthen its military amid an atmosphere of distrust and tension while trying to diversify its economy and raise the national standard of living.
Kim's call for improving inter-Korea relations comes as Pyongyang is facing heightened criticism over its human rights record and souring ties with Washington over allegations it was involved in the massive hacking attack on Sony Pictures, which has caused major economic damage to the company and clouded the release of "The Interview," a dark comedy that portrayed an assassination attempt on Kim. Iraqi media says ISIS militants have contracted Ebola
Reports that Islamic State militants in Mosul have contracted Ebola swirled though Iraqi media sources on Wednesday. World Health Organization officials said they haven't confirmed the cases, but the organization has reached out to offer assistance
Three outlets reported that Ebola showed up at a hospital in Mosul, a city 250 miles north of Baghdad that's been under ISIS control since June 2014. The reports, however, have perpetuated mostly in pro-government and Kurdish media.
"We have no official notification from [the Iraqi government] that it is Ebola," Christy Feig, WHO's director of communications told Mashable Read more...

2014 was a bad year for movies — here’s what went wrong
LOS ANGELES — “It was a great year for movies” is one of those phrases that gets trotted out annually around this time, as bloggers whip up their top 10 lists and prestige films start preening for awards attention. On the whole, it can’t always be true.
It pains me to say it, but this is one of those years when it’s not. 2014 just wasn’t all that great for movies, and that means creatively, at the box office and for the overall health of the business — three factors that always seem to run in a pack.
SEE ALSO: Movies to look forward to in 2015
Here’s the good news: 2015 will bounce back so vigorously that “It was a great year for movies” will be a silly understatementThe Avengers are back. Spielberg and Tarantino are back. So are the Fast and Furious gang, Pixar (twice!), not to mention 50 shades of potentially profitable newcomers. There will be an awakening in the box-office Force, and it will be record-breaking. Apple sued for making the iOS 8 update too big
Remember the collective Internet freakout over the massive iOS 8 download?
Well, now that freakout has taken the form of a lawsuit. Specifically, a class action suit filed in the United States District Court in San Francisco Tuesday, which claims Apple misled users about the size of the iOS 8 update. Two individuals are named in the suit, both from Miami
The suit focuses on users with 8 GB and 16 GB devices, who are most affected by the unwieldy iOS 8 download since they lose a significant portion of their storage capacity when they upgrade, according to the suit. Read more...

Mark Zuckerberg's 2015 resolutions, as suggested by Facebook users
Every year, Mark Zuckerberg gives himself a personal challenge, because being a 30-year-old founder of the largest social network in the world just isn't enough.
This year, he crowdsourced recommendations on, of course, Facebook
Many users took the opportunity to give Zuckerberg suggestions on how to improve the website instead of himself — adding the often-requested "dislike" button was well-represented in the suggestions. There were also plenty of proposals to make the world a better place, like visiting classrooms every week, feeding the homeless, and reaching out to Facebook users to offer encouragement Read more...

The most important news story of the year — according to Americans
From the Ebola outbreak to Ferguson protests, 2014 was a year of news that rocked the world. But which one of those stories had the biggest impact on Americans?
Mashable posed that question to 1,502 people in the U.S. We surveyed a wide-ranging demographic: both male and female, ages 18 to 65, living in rural and urban communities. (You can see a breakdown at the bottom of this story.)
We asked only one question. The respondent could only select one out of six answers — presented in random order — or he or she could write in a response
Q: What was the most important news story of 2014?

Shopify's Toronto office is way cooler than yours
Not everyone loves the open-office trend, but Shopify's new Toronto office may convince some doubters.
The online commerce company, which is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, opened its Toronto office — a 100-year-old warehouse — in May. The office has been a huge renovation project, which is why Shopify is only showing it off now. The company contracted M-S-D-S Studio, a Toronto design firm, to reflect Shopify's "core values of transparency and the open exchange of information," according to the design agency
The office includes 90 workstations, a boardroom, three large meeting rooms, six small meeting rooms, two phone booths, a cafeteria, a kitchen/cafe, a gallery, games room, break-out and informal workspaces, plus a reception area and retail shop. Check out photos, below: Read more...
